What is the difference between plain lanyards and reel lanyards?

The simple answer is that reel lanyards have a retractable reel (like these) at the end of the lanyard that allows the wearer to use their ID without having to remove their lanyard from their neck.

For example, if the card reader is low on the wall, an employee that uses a regular lanyard would have to take the lanyard off to swipe their ID card, but with a reel lanyard that's not necessary since the ID can extract and retract thanks to the addition of the reel at the end of the lanyard.
